Hiring a Personal Trainer

Posted by admin On September - 1 - 2008

If you want to lose weight or get in shape, a personal trainer can help you achieve your goals. A good personal trainer will work to understand your goals and will develop a personalized plan to help you achieve them. There are some things you should keep in mind before you choose a personal trainer, however, that will ensure you get the most out of the experience.

A personal trainer’s job is to help you achieve your fitness goals by providing you with guidance and education about the best exercises and techniques for your needs. They will also help you track your progress and make sure you are completing your goals. A personal trainer cannot, however, force you to work out or perform a miracle. They will help you to stay motivated but the bottom line is that you must take responsibility for your own fitness and participate fully in the program if you want to see results.

Before you hire a personal trainer make sure they are certified through a fitness organization such as the ACE, ACSM, or the NSCA. Some personal trainers will also have college experience that deals with exercise training and having this knowledge and experience is also helpful. You should also make sure the personal trainer you choose is certified in CPR and first aid, especially if you train alone as accidents do happen. You should also make sure that the personal trainer you choose is experienced in the field in which you are interested in. Some people want to lose weight, others want to tone their muscles, and some want to build muscle. Some personal trainers are qualified to help you with different goals so make sure the one you choose has a background in the field you are interested in.

If you have a specific medical condition or injury you must also be sure that your personal trainer has the knowledge to design a program for you keeping your needs in mind. A personal trainer should be a good listener and should do their best job to fully understand your needs and goals before designing a program for you. Make sure the personal trainer you choose will design a program tailored specifically to your needs, or else you may not get the results you want. A good trainer will also pay close attention to your progress and will make sure you are doing all of the exercises the right way and with the proper technique.

Make sure your personal trainer listens to and addresses your questions and concerns. You should also pick personal trainer that meshes with your personality, if you are not the most motivated person in the world you may need a trainer that will give you the extra push you need. You also have to remember, however, that your body does need rest so avoid a trainer who will make you exert yourself to the fullest everyday without giving your body time to rest in between. The most effective workout programs involve vigorous exercise no more than every other day, with light exercise or recovery periods in between.
